The Nikamika Journey
Nikamika Publication is a registered trust in Assam, India founded by Chayanika Sahariah, a teacher, and Anamika Nath, a singer—two mothers who created Assamese language learning books out of concern that their children and others were growing up speaking Assamese but unable to read or write it properly, especially as English-medium schools increasingly prioritized foreign languages over the mother tongue in early education. Their thoughtfully structured collection introduces the Assamese alphabet one character at a time through foundational vowel and consonant charts, handwriting workbooks, pocket-sized picture books with reference illustrations, and a groundbreaking sixth volume featuring 101 compound letters—the first of its kind in Assamese publishing—designed to help children build progressive literacy from the basics upward rather than rushing into complex material prematurely, all with the mission of preserving Assamese identity by ensuring every child can one day read Assamese literature, newspapers, and express themselves fluently in the language of their heritage.
